new puppy

Nope, not ours... but I am still incredibly excited about it!

That's allowed, right?

My family in New Mexico is getting a brand new miniature schnauzer puppy and she is super adorable from the looks of the pictures. While I am feeling very jealous, I am happy that I'll at least get to see her when I go visit! Her name right now is Zenia, but they're probably going to change it to something they choose. Anyway, I have definitely had a case of puppy fever since finding out they were getting her. I've even dragged Brian to PetSmart in hopes of seeing puppies (did you know they don't have puppies at PetSmart - only cats!).

Anyway, if you have a puppy, I'd love to come and hang out for a while. Let me know.

Brian let me cut his hair!

It's true - Brian's fro is gone! Let's just say he was loooong overdue for a haircut. I asked him if I could do it and surprisingly he said yes. So, I bought some clippers on the way home from work and chopped off his lovely locks the next morning before I headed out to NM.

I did quite well for my first time, if I do say so myself!

BEFORE

POSED AND READY WITH MY CLIPPERS!

isn't he handsome?!

ok, so I missed some around the ears :/   ^^

But hey, not too bad, eh? Let me know if you need a haircut - I am ready for some more victims!

story time... and photos!

It was a fantastic week :)

I am really enjoying my new job. The other girls I am orienting with are just so dang fun and we are able to make the 8 hours of bookwork go by fairly fast and have a good time about it. We laugh and laugh and laugh. I am so grateful that it doesn't have to be all serious and dull. Of course, it is nice to be learning a lot about the babies too :)

It is weird being gone so much, but I am enjoying having something useful to do with my time and I definitely don't mind getting paid for it! Now, don't think this has stopped Brian and me from donating plasma... we went twice this week and racked up $150! I sure wish I had known about this place freshman year. It could've paid for all of my snowboarding adventures for sure. For now, it is going towards the gas I burn to get to the U.

Ok, time for a funny story. Or, at least I think it's funny. Luckily, so does Brian.

So... Monday was President's Day and Brian did not have school (yay!). However, he is a little behind in his dental shadowing hours (not so yay) and so needed to spend the day doing useful things like watching teeth get extracted. Well, one of my best friends (Megan!) has a few brother-in-laws who have a dental practice up in Salt Lake and she was so so nice to ask them if Brian could shadow for a day. They were willing and he set it all up. So far so good, right?

Well, I had work that day and so I just dropped him off at the dental office on my way. Or, at least I dropped him off where we thought the dental office was. FAIL.

I call him up at lunch and find out that the dental office was not, in fact, on Foothill Drive (that was the office the are renovating and eventually going to move to). Nope, he ended up walking FOUR MILES to get to the real office! Luckily one of his boots for his broken feet was removed last week, but he still had one on. He is such a trooper though. Rather than complain about having to walk forever, he told me about what an adventure it was. He met a guy smoking pot(?) who asked him for a lighter and some other interesting people. He made it to the office about an hour late, but then had such a great day. He really loved shadowing Doctor Dave and learned a whole lot. He is so excited to be a Dentist :). Better him than me! I came in at the end of the day to watch a tooth being put in, and it just made me cringe to see them hammer it in.... It's weird how I can handle nursing stuff but not dental stuff very well! Brian is now thinking about going into oral maxillary surgery because his favorite part of dentistry is all the cutting open and fixing up. Ew.

Some photos from this week and last...

First day as a real nurse in the NICU!

See that ridiculously GIGANTIC binder? That is what we get to study/memorize. You can see how it compares to a relatively full 1-inch binder. Yikes!

Yes, it is heavy.

Badge! Oh how exciting to get a badge :)
This is the incredible homemade pizza we made with our new pizza stone! Delish!!

This is the day we celebrated Valentine's Day. You are probably wondering what we are holding. Well, it's panini bread (homemade!) that we dyed pink for the occasional - I know, I know - cheesy!

This picture just doesn't do it justice... But this is the INCREDIBLE homemade ice cream we made for valentines day. Quite possibly the fluffiest and most delicious ice cream I have ever had (and I've had a lot of ice cream over the course of my life...)!!

Oh! And Happy 8 months to us! Can't believe it - it's gone by so fast!

my *adorable* new nephew

Well, guess who got to go home for the weekend and meet her new baby nephew?! ME! Man, I'm lucky. I am also a slacker for the week when it comes to school and I will pay for that tomorrow :/. So, I drove the 9 hours on Friday, spent an amazing Saturday, Sunday, and Monday with the fam, and then drove back 9 hours today. Quick trip? Yes. Worth it? Definitely. Here are some of the adorable pictures! :D

This is the face that greeted me at the door - and look at that cute outfit!

precious. He is such a good baby!

After a swaddling lesson

look at those eyes! I hope they stay blue.

yes, he smiles - a lot!

:)

He liked his aunt (I hope!)

Beautiful momma (my sister, Jen) and Gage the frog.

He's in his Halloween outfit - you can't really see it, but it's a super cute skeleton onesie.
such a cuddlebug!

CTR 5 kiddos

I'm a primary teacher! Yep, and I am excited about it.

Today was my first day and after a bit of confusion, my team teacher, Sister Kleinert (also new), and I found our class and had a hilariously good time. Who knew five year olds were so funny?! Our class today consisted of 5 very energetic boys. Our topic was serving others and we discussed the story of the Good Samaritan.

Quotes of the day (keep in mind, they are all boys):

  • "My favorite food is spaghetti with pink meatballs"
  • "I have to go to the bathroom..." (5 different times, 5 different boys)
  • "What's my favorite color? Pink of course."
  • "I don't want to be a robber, I want to be a skeleton!" (In the Good Samaritan skit we did)
Not to mention we did the skit 5 times so that they could all take turns being the man who got robbed and the Good Samaritan.

The important thing is that they learn and I feel like they all left with an increased understanding of not only the story, but also of how to be more like Jesus Christ by serving others.

p.s. Brian and I wrote some more mission stories on our mission blog - check them out if you want!

rock climbing... "rock on!"

So, our lovely friends Hannah and Chris invited us to go rock climbing with them AGES ago, but we only just got our schedules all worked out so we could go. So, Saturday (before the incredibly embarrassing football game), we went up to Rock Canyon and tackled a mountain! It was super fun, super scary, and a super good workout. I am a bit sore today...

Definitely a new thing for me and it was great! I have found that I need to seriously improve my strength, however :/....

I'm glad that Brian likes to do adventurous things with me. There's always something new to try out!

Brian rappelling down the mountain after they got our rope set up.
And there she goes! Hannah went first and showed us how it was done.

we estimated it to be around 80 ft.
isn't she cute? who knew she was a rock-climbing master?!
so, it looks like I'm falling in this one... but I didn't fall - promise!

STRAIGHT up.

I made it!!
so much fun :)
"he climbs like a monkey!" ...
this part was scary
and... expert #2 to show us how it's done!

fake GRADUATION!

That's right, I am a fake graduate. I walked even though I still have school until December! At BYU they do not hold graduation in December, so our choice was either to walk early this August or walk late after we graduate next April. So, we decided to do it early and get it all over with :). It was fun! My parents came out for the occasion (as always I was thrilled to see them!), Brian got off work, and we all celebrated my fake graduation together! I am excited to be a real graduate in a few months... but then I'll have to actually grow up and get a real job. At least I'll finally get paid for the work I do in the hospitals!

I am super excited for my time in the NICU next semester. I talked with my preceptor and she seems really awesome. She told me that her favorite thing about being a nurse is teaching new nurses and students.... that is a relief to hear! So many times I feel like a burden when I go to clinicals because we have to follow our nurses around everywhere and some of them just do not appreciate that! But, it sounds like my preceptor is going to be awesome! Yeah for NICU!

aren't those flowers BEAUTIFUL! He does a good job :) I love him!

I had a hard time with the hat all day... it just didn't want to stay on!

my wonderful parents! Love!

When we walked across the stage they put a big picture of us up on the screen and our favorite quote. My favorite quote of the day was "The only true gift is a portion of yourself" - Ralph Waldo Emerson

it was SO HOT outside! I was happy to play in the stream!
