Nurse: Rachael, would you like to do the suction on this baby?
Me: Yessss!... sanitize hands, put on gloves, assess the baby, and start suctioning through her ET tube.
...
...
Nothing is suctioning!
Nurse: um. Did you hook up the suction?
Me: Look, cringe... "no :("
ooops.... hurriedly correct the stupid mistake and start suction again
success!
Just love being a nursing student! Not as bad as the time I was performing the "whoosh" test without hooking up the syringe to the NG tube. CRINGE.
On the up side, I am learning a lot and feel like I make a lot less mistakes. I love working in the NICU and have such a blast with my nurse - she rocks! I hope I can be a great nurse like her one day :)
watch out real world, I will be a nurse early next year! |
At least this didn't happen to you as a nurse: some twenty year old guy felt like he had phlegm/mucous that he was trying to cough up and he asked me to suction it out. So I suctioned and as I pulled the yankeur out I noticed skin tissue was still attached and stretched out and still attached. I then realized that what he was referring To as phlegm was actually his uvula and I almost sucked it out. Embarrassing.
ReplyDeleteYou will be an excellent nurse!!
ReplyDeleteLove you,
Mom
If it makes you feel any better, I forgot my shoes yesterday. Walked on to the floor, changed into the L and D scrubs, looked down in my bag, and had no shoes for clinical. who does that?! so embarrassing. Love being students!
ReplyDeleteRach, please! I do something like this on a daily basis!! You will be a wonderful, if not the best nurse!!
